Abrasive Blast Media

Substance: Abrasive Blast Media

Metal Finishing Supply has a wide variety of air and wheel blast media to fit your applications. We supply only virgin grade material of the highest quality manufacturers in order to maximize your surface preparation while reducing the chance of coating failure. There are a number of options available when selecting abrasive to use and we can help you select the right abrasive for your needs/application.

Choosing an abrasive can be determined by a number of functions:
  1. Blast Area/Location: Outside, Inside (Blast Room), hand cabinet
  2. Type of Equipment (Blast room w/reclaim, portable air blast, suction or pressure hand cabinet, wheel blast machine)
  3. Recyclability, Do/Are you going to re-use
  4. Material to be blasted
  5. Surface profile and surface finish desired
  6. Disposal costs

Factors to consider include the effects the media will have on a surface and the actual cost, not just the initial purchase cost. If a media costs three times as much, but the attrition rate is 20 times less, it becomes more economical to use that media. Round media will impact a wide area and angular media will cut into a surface. The heavier and harder a media is, the deeper the impact and more concentrated the work will be. Softer media will have less impact and spread the effect out on the surface of the material.

Note: Do not use Crystalline Silica or any abrasive in a portable, cabinet or wheel machine that has more than 1% free silica (or greater than 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air) in it to curb the effects of silicosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease. End users and blasters are responsible to wear the proper safety gear (sold by Metal Finishing Supply) during abrasive blast operations.

A fast-cutting, general purpose, economically priced by-product abrasive to use when recyclability is not an option. It has high friability, is chemically inert with less than 1% free silica. Its angular shape and hardness (7.0-7.5 Mohs) quickly cuts away existing coatings. Can be used on building, tanks, castings, ships, bridges, railroad, structural steel, exposed aggregate and more. Approximate life cycle is 1 use with this media. Dull or Shiny Black, dark brown or green irregular particles. Not recommended for use in a blast cabinet or blast room enclosure.

5 grade sizes are available and packaged in 50 lb bags, 100 lb. bags, 3,000 lb. or 3,750 lb. bulk bags or supplied in bulk truckload quantities. Ability to add Blastox (for lead abatement projects) or a Dust Suppressant to product is available.

A 100% recycled material that is an economically priced alternative to that of silica sand with 0% free silica. It is low dusting, sharp and angular while being lighter weight than many slags for increased consumption efficiency and production time (up to 30-50% less material used). It has very low particle embedment and will produce a whiter, cleaner finish. With a moderate friability (5.0 Mohs) Recyclability is low with 2-3 cycle passes. White or Brownish-mixed color in appearance.

Available in a X-Coarse, Coarse, Medium, Fine, X-fine grade. Packaged in 50 lb. bags (2,400 lbs/pallet), 3,000 lb bulk bags or supplied in bulk truckload quantities.

A lower cost, manufactured mineral, that will give you 2-3 cycles of reuse over that of slag. Staurolite or Starblast Ultra® is a hard mineral which will be ideal for new steel prep and general mill scale removal. Starblast® is a finer grade mineral that works great for light rust, brittle paint and mill scale. Both products will give you a more uniform blast pattern than slag and will be able to produce a white metal finish when blasted correctly. Both materials are manufactured by DuPont®. Brown to reddish-brown in color and <1%-3% free silica.

Packaged in 50 lb bags (4,000 lbs/pallet) or available in bulk quantities.

Garnet is an inert, non-toxic, naturally mined mineral that is a high performance, low-dusting abrasive alternative to slag media. It is fast-cutting and ideal for industrial coating applications, achieving a white metal blast without embedment or surface contamination. Garnet is also used for waterjet cutting applications. It is economical enough to be used as a single use abrasive or recycled for multiple uses. With a hardness of 7.5-8.0 on the Moh scale, it will break up less giving you more cycles of use (apx 4-7 cycles) while achieving the performance of more expensive recyclable abrasives. Garnet is more forgiving on equipment and parts wear than slag or other abrasives. Reddish-Brown to pink color in appearance.

Available in a variety of Sizes including Coarse (20/40), Medium-Coarse (30/60), Medium (60), Fine (80) or X-fine (120). Waterjet quality or Sandblast quality is available. Packaged in 55 lb bags (2,200 lbs/pallet), 2,200 lb or 4,400 lb bulk bags.

Aluminum Oxide is one of the most versatile abrasives available for surface preparation. It is a very hard and sharp, aggressive, high performance manufactured ceramic abrasive. It is a very cost effective abrasive when recycled, which is why it is the abrasive of choice when used in a blast room short of steel shot/grit. Less than 1% free silica, it has maximum resistance to breakdown, a low-iron content and eliminates the danger of rust-staining. You find aluminum oxide used in many applications and industries such as abrasive blasting, liquid honing, vibratory media, non-skid floor coatings, sandpaper, abrasive belt sanding and coated abrasive applications. Metal Finishing Supply only provides virgin grade, High-Quality, Factory certified and conforming Aluminum Oxide to its customers.

Brown Aluminum oxide is the most common type and used for general cleaning, finishing, deburring and etching of parts and surfaces. Due to its extreme hardness (9.0 Mohs), it has a low friability and can be recycled and reused many times, roughly 10-12 cycles. Brown in color, it comes and is stocked in a wide range of grit sizes ranging from 6 to 500 including micron sizes. Packaged in 50 lbs bags (2,000 lbs/pallet), 400 lb drums (1,600 lbs/pallet), or 3,000 lb bulk bags.

White Aluminum oxide is a "washed" aluminum oxide to effectively reduce the remaining iron and other metal contents and give it a "high-purity." It is suitable for sandblasting of non-ferrous metals (e.g. brass, aluminum), stainless steel, high alloyed steel and special alloys or special applications such as aircrafts, turbine or reactor construction. It is also used in medical and dental applications/industries or applications that require a sanitary use. Slightly longer life and lower toughness than its brown counterpart. White is available in grits 12 to 240 including micron sizes (and other special ordered sizes). Packaged in 55 lb. bags or 400 lb. drums.
